Twenty-Fifth Annual Scientific Sessions of the JSA
The announcement about the 25th Annual Scientific Sessions of JSA was published in the Valampuri daily newspaper on May 4, 2018. The sessions held on May 8, 9 & 10, 2018 at the University of Jaffna on the theme Career Development for Sustainable Employability.
The inaugural session was chaired by the President, Mrs.S.M.C.Mahenthiran Aloysius. The chief guest and Professor K. Balasubramaniam gold medal recipient, Professor Godwin Roger Constantine, Professor in Cardiology and Head, Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Colombo delivered the Prof. Kandiah Balasubramaniam gold medal lecture on ‘Aiming for Better Control of Diabetes through New Therapeutic Options’. The lecture was well attended. After the gold medal lecture, Silver Jubilee magazine, Pirayoga vingnana Sudar, Yazhin Thedal and JSA Newsletters were released by the respective editors followed by uploading of the first research article in JJSA by the Chief Editor of JJSA, Professor S Noble Surendran and release of the documentary on ‘JSA in 25 years’ by Dr.S.Mahesan.
During the sectional sessions, addresses of sectional chairpersons and popular lectures were delivered.

The Theme Seminar was chaired by Prof.T.Velnampy. The panel members shared their knowledge and experiences, and discussed on the selected topics with audience. The session was informative and thought-provoking.

Out of the 34 abstracts received, 32 were accepted for presentation after a rigorous double-blind review process and only 28 abstracts were presented at the 25th Annual Scientific Sessions.
The 25th Annual General Meeting of the Jaffna Science Association (Guarantee) Limited was held on 10 May 2018. Later on the day, the incoming President of the JSA, Dr.P.Iyngaran, delivered the presidential address on ‘Green Chemistry’, followed by the most expected awarding ceremony in which medals and certificates were given away to the winners of School Science Programme conducted as a main part of the JSA programmes in 2017/18.
A memorial fund for awarding gold medal for the English and Tamil Oration in the field of Science and Technology annually had been established with the generous financial assistance from the children of late Professor Kunaratnam in recognition of Late Professor Kunaratnam's immense contribution in the field of Science and Technology and to the educational development of the Jaffna community. The first gold medals for English and Tamil orations were awarded to Ms. Nikethanaa Kesavan of J/Chundikuli Girls’ College and Ms. Mathusa Sirisena of V/Rambaikulam Girls Maha Vidyalayam respectively. The gold medalists delivered their orations at the 25th Annual Scientific Sessions of JSA.
