ஆண்டுதோறும் வடமாகாணப் பாடசாலை மாணவர்களுக்கு இடையில் யாழ்ப்பாண விஞ்ஞானச் சங்கம் பல்வேறு விஞ்ஞானம் சார்ந்த போட்டி நிகழ்ச்சிகளை நடாத்தி வருகின்றது. அதன் தொடர்ச்சியாக இவ்வருடமும் பின்வரும் 7 வேறுபட்ட எண்ணக்கருக்களுடன் போட்டிகளை நடாத்த உத்தேசிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது:

3. விஞ்ஞானக் கட்டுரைப் போட்டி (Essay Competition)

இப்போட்டிகளுக்காக பாடசாலை மாணவர்கள் கீழ்வரும் மூன்று பிரிவுகளாக வகைப்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளனர்:
பிரிவு I – தரம் 6-8
பிரிவு II – தரம் 9-11
பிரிவு III – தரம் 12-13

ஒவ்வொரு போட்டிகளுக்கான பரிசில்களும் சான்றிதழ்களும் யாழ்ப்பாண விஞ்ஞானச் சங்கத்தின் வருடாந்த அமர்வின் இறுதி நாள் நிகழ்வில் வழங்கப்படுவதுடன் பங்குபற்றும் மாணவர்கள் அனைவருக்கும் e-certificate வழங்கப்படும்.

Jaffna Science Association
School Science Programmes 2023-2024
Jaffna Science Association (JSA) annually conducts science competitions for school children from the Northern province under various categories. The following seven competitions are to be conducted for the year 2023-2024:
1. Exhibit competition
2. Poster competition
3. Essay Competition
4. School gardening competition
5. Quiz competition
6. Fiction story competition
7. Oration competition

The potential participants are categorized into the following groups for most of the competitions;
• Group I- Grades 6-8
• Group II- Grades 9-11
• Group III- Grades 12 and 13

The winners (first three places) will be awarded with certificates and/or medals at the final day of the annual sessions of the JSA and all the participants will be given an e-certificate.

The schools which intend to participate in the competitions should apply through any of the following ways;

One form should be submitted by a single school filling out the details of all the competitions along with the list of participants as per the guidelines illustrated below. The dates and venues for the competitions will be informed to the schools submitted the application in due course.

Exhibit competition

Rationale
An exhibition is a collection of displays and presentations organized around a particular theme or concept. Exhibitions play a significant role in enhancing the creativity and innovation of school students and creating a better generation by altering their ways of thinking, acting, and perceiving the world.

Objective
• To create awareness about the theme among the school students
• To promote innovation and creativity
Expected outcome
Better exhibitions regarding “Promoting fundamental research by embracing eco-friendly principles to foster a sustainable future” prepared by school students will be selected and displayed at the JSA’s annual sessions. School student’s thoughts and creativity regarding the topic will be appreciated and publicized.
Target groups and competition detail
Schools students from the Northern Province. Any number of exhibits can be participating from a school either as individual student or a group consists of a maximum of three members. Environmental degradation, improved energy usage, waste management, and water recycling should be considered when preparing the exhibits. The students are expected to exhibit their products based on the theme “Promoting fundamental research by embracing eco-friendly principles to foster a sustainable future” at a school as informed by the JSA. They should be able to explain the exhibits and answer the questions asked by the panel of judges. The best exhibits will be selected by a panel of experts. Innovation, Self-motivation, User friendliness, Technical simplicity, National or regional importance and Sustainability will be considered when selecting the best exhibits. The decision of the judges shall be final. The competition will be held on 15 November 2023

Poster competition

Rationale:
Posters have great worth other than as an instructional tool. School students can interpret their vision about a concept by creating murals or posters. They are one of the better ways to enhance the creativity of students.
Objective
• To create awareness about the theme among the school students
• To promote innovation and creativity

Expected outcome
Better posters regarding “Promoting fundamental research by embracing eco-friendly principles to foster a sustainable future” prepared by school students will be selected and displayed at the JSA’s annual sessions. School student’s thoughts regarding the topic will be appreciated and publicized.
Target groups and competition detail
Schools students from the Northern Province. Maximum of three students from each groups will be allowed per school. Students should draw their posters on the theme “Promoting fundamental research by embracing eco-friendly principles to foster a sustainable future” using bristle board at a specific school as informed by the JSA. They can use colors and or/ cloth pieces and prepare the posters within a given time. The best posters will be selected by a panel of experts based on the theme, creativity, innovation, attractiveness, simplicity and explanation. The decision of the judges shall be final. The competition will be held on 15 November 2023

School Gardening
Rationale
School gardens are a wonderful way to use the schoolyard as a classroom, reconnect students with the natural world and the true source of their food, and teach them valuable gardening and agriculture concepts and skills that integrate with several subjects, such as mathematics, science, art, health and physical education, and social studies, as well as several educational goals, including personal and social responsibility.

In Sri Lanka establishment of school gardens is encouraged by the Ministry of Education. Many schools have school gardens and students are actively involved in developing school gardens. Northern Province have lesser number of school gardens when compared to other provinces. This may be due to the three decades old civil war. This situation is changing after the end of civil war. Nowadays many schools of this region started to establish school gardens in their school premises.
Objective
• To create awareness about the importance of maintaining a school garden
• To promote organic farming and healthy practices
• To promote self-sufficiency
Expected outcome
Participation of students in the establishment of school garden will be further improved by conducting competitions to select schools having better school gardens. Establishment of school gardens will improve students’ practical skills and knowledge and they learn about the organic agriculture and environmental friendly cultivation methods. This will improve the awareness about protection of our environment by our future generation. Finally, this leads to the development of the region with healthy environment.
Target groups and competition detail
Schools will be visited by a panel of experts in the second week of February 2024 to evaluate the gardens and records. The schools will be informed about the exact date of visits in due course. The evaluation shall consider the size of the garden (minimum of 10 x 20 sq feet), engagement of teachers and students, crop diversity, name boards (common, family, and scientific names) for crops, use of technology to improve harvest, climate adaptations, integrated approach, use of organic substances, use of harvest and record keeping. The decision of the judges shall be final.

Target groups
Schools from the Northern Province where agriculture is offered as a subject.

Essay Competition
Rationale
Identifying the causes of environmental degradation and the ways to sustain the resources by using them meaningfully is important. Creating the awareness about these concepts among the school children who are the future leaders should be prioritized to achieve this goal.

Objective
• To create awareness about the theme
• To promote students to express innovative ideas to tackle the issues related to environment
• To create a platform for developing scientific writing skills
Expected outcome
Participation will be able to express the principles, and theories related to the theme and topic. They will be able to hone their scientific writing skills.
Target groups and competition detail
Schools students from the Northern Province from grades 12 and 13 from science/ technology streams. The essays shall be based on applied science or technology in Tamil medium. The students should send their original and unpublished essays (1000 to 1500 words with a maximum of two to three figures and one table) after certified by the class teacher and through the school principal to the following address on or before 30 November 2023. A panel of judges will evaluate the essays based on the content related to the title, creativity, innovation, flow of writing, fact-based arguments, and the quality of cited examples. The decision of the judges shall be final.

Quiz Competition
Rationale
A quiz contest otherwise called as ‘mind sport’ is a game in which the players tend to answer the given questions. Quiz contest evaluate the knowledge, understanding and mental skill of the participants. Quizzes are enabling the students to think in different angles out of their routine study. In our country the traditional frame work of the study system makes the students to adhere more in class work and allow a narrow room for scientific thinking. By conducting Science quiz contest, will help the students to expand the knowledge in different aspect of science ie, medical science, applied science, social science and pure science.

Objective
• To improve the knowledge in medical, pure, applied and social sciences
• To enhance scientific thinking
• To develop reading and researching abilities
• To promote a healthy debate among the participants
• To promote group harmony among the schools
• To aid to build team work
Expected outcome
By participating in the quiz contest students will improve their knowledge in various fields in the science and better predict their knowledge. They will learn how to transfer and apply the scientific knowledge. Quiz contest will motivate the students to gain more knowledge towards the specific area. Participation of students in quiz contest will help the students to handle the stress situations and nervousness. And also the participants will learn the value of patience, determination, hard work and self – discipline.
Target groups and competition detail
A team of five members from the schools in the Northern Province from grades 12 and 13 can participate. The competitions will be held in Tamil and English medium. The written examination will be held on 10 November 2023 as the first round either face to face or in virtual mode. 06 teams will be selected for second round of oral quiz competition based on the marks obtained in written examinations. The final round will be held for three schools obtained highest marks in the second round. The decision of the judges shall be final.

Award detail
Certificates for the first 10 places in written examinations and trophies and certificates for the schools obtaining first three places in the final competition will be awarded at the final day of the annual session of the JSA.

Story (Fiction) Competition

Rationale

Objective

• To promote students to express innovative ideas to tackle the issues related to environment
• To create a platform for developing creative writing skills
Expected outcome
Participation will be able to express the principles, and theories related to the theme and topic. They will be able to hone their scientific writing skills.
Target groups and competition detail
Two students from each schools in the Northern Province from group II (Grades 9-11). The students can select either Tamil or English medium. The competition will be held in on a specific place as informed by the JSA on 10 November 2023. The story should be written within 300-500 words on a given topic within an hour. A suitable title should also be written. The best stories will be selected by a panel of judges based on the connection between the content and the topic, title’s suitability, creativity, vocabulary and use of punctuation marks. Any story which has been published elsewhere will be rejected. The decision of the judges shall be final.

Oration
Rationale

Objective

• To promote students to express innovative ideas to tackle the issues related to environment
• To create a platform for developing scientific communication skills
Expected outcome
Participation will be able to express the principles, and theories related to the theme and topic. They will be able to hone their scientific speaking skills.
Target groups and competition detail
Two students from each groups (I, II, III) from the schools in the Northern Province. The competition will be held on a specific place as informed by the JSA on 20 November 2023. There will be two round son competitions. The first round will be held where the students are expected to prepare the speeches based on titles given. They have to prepare a speech for 8-10 minutes. 10 students will be selected for the second round based on their performances. The date for the second round shall be notified in due course. The orations will be evaluated by a panel of judges based on content, facts, confidence, introduction, flow and growth of logical arguments and fact presentations, statistical data, facial expressions, choice of words, body language, voice, timing, and the flow. Points shall be reduced for statements or contents outside the topic, timing (for every 15s either below or over the time limit), and improper conclusion. The decision of the judges shall be final.

Award detail

Certificates and medals for the first three places will be awarded at the final day of the annual session of the JSA. Certificates will be awarded for the students selected for the second round at the same event.
